The Paper Mache’ Animals

29 Oct

It’s the blog post about our epic paper mache’ animals.

When I heard we had to produce a piece of artwork for the school art show I saw it as a great opportunity to use the task to assess our technology and art content descriptors.

We started the task by drawing a plan for our paper mache’ animals.

The students looked through books to choose which animal they would make and then drew a plan and created a list of materials that they would need.

Our 2nd phase was to make the animals by using box construction.

The third (and most time consuming) phase was the paper mache’.  The students did 3 coats – 2 in newspapers and the final in butchers paper (the butchers paper makes it easier to paint).

Lastly we painted and decorated our animals.

Kids are so creative and they came up with the most fantastic ideas for their animals.

They all looked fantastic on display and I’m sure their parents are all busy finding the perfect spot in their house to display them 🙂

The School Fair Week

25 Oct

Welcome to another week in my Prep/Year 1 classroom.

This week has been huge as we prepare for the School Fair on Saturday.

Most of our focus this week has been on completing our paper mache’ animal scultptures………it is hard to put into words the fun involved in making these!!

Here is my Five for Friday teacher post.

  1. 100’s Board (Old School) – I found this old 100’s board in our shed.  It has been the perfect independent activity for math’s groups this week (and I also love how getting the numbers on and off the hooks is also good fine motor practice – bonus!!).IMG_2430
  2. The Domino Effect – Remember lining up your dominoes so they would fall over.  Well a few students spent ages setting this up with the class blocks during inside time this week.IMG_2456
  3. Birthday Season – October is the month of birthdays in my room. We have at least one birthday every week. Check out this pizza cookie one of the students bought in to share with the class!  Have you ever seen anything like it before?IMG_2429
  4. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr Morris Lessmore – We are in love with this book.  I read my class the picture book on Wednesday. On Thursday we watched the book on the iPad (I beamed it up onto the whiteboard) and on Friday we plan to watch the short movie of it.  Obviously we will be comparing and contrasting the different media versions but we do love it!book
  5. Paper Mache’ Animal Sculptures- Every day this week we have been painting and decorating our animals and I am happy to report they are ready to go! Tomorrow we will be taking them to the art exhibition all ready for the parents to admire at the school fair on Saturday.IMG_2469

Well that’s another wrap – see you next week!

My aim this term is to have weekly meditation time in my classroom.

I am hopeless at meditating myself.

I’m the lady who at the end of the Body Balance, when you are meant to meditate who is tossing and turning and working out what I am going to have for dinner.

At school we currently have “quiet time” where we turn off the lights and students choose to either lie down or read quietly.  It’s this time that I would like to turn into our meditation time.

So last Friday we had our first meditation attempt.

We turned the lights off, laid down, breathed in an out and started.

The phone rang.

The Year 7’s came to the door to deliver the message folder and

a huge clap of thunder occurred.

At this point I nearly shut the book and turned the lights back on but I persevered and finished the session.

I was beginning to think that the session had been a BIG waste of time.

Then afterwards I asked the class to tell me how it felt to be meditating.

Their answers included:

Umm not bad I thought for a class or Prep/Year 1’s.  I think they understood what I was trying to do.

So we will persevere and try it again this week.

Wish me luck!

A “Fortnights” Wrap Up

18 Oct

Welcome Back to Term 2!

I didn’t post last Friday so this Five for Friday teacher post is for the past two weeks.

  1. The Brisbane Broncos – We had the Broncos come and visit our school (on the very first day of term). One of the little girls in my class even had her photo in the local paper with them!IMG_2337
  2. Bunnings: Our local Bunnings store came to school to do a wood workshop with us. I wrote about it here if you want more details.IMG_2361
  3. Foamy Stuff – I’m not quite sure what the ‘offical’ name of this stuff is but I mixed shaving cream and cornflour together to make this thick foam stuff.  I also added food colour to make it more interesting.IMG_2345
  4. Fire Visit – This week we have the Fire Fighters return for their follow up visit with us.  This time they brought their truck with them.IMG_2415
  5. Paper Mache’- Every morning this week we have been elbow deep in paper mache’.  Thank goodness for the lovely mothers and grandmothers that have stopped by to help us.  We are making animal sculptures for the school art show.  This project is massive and I’m pretty sure I will be doing a whole blog post just on them when they are finished!IMG_2408

See you all next week.

Bunnings Workshop

9 Oct

Today we had the lovely Steph from Bunnings visit our school and conduct a wood working workshop with our Prep/Year 1 students.

This is a fantastic program that Bunnings offers (for free) to schools.

They bring everything with them – wood, glue, nails, hammers, even the aprons!

I love that this program provides students with an activity that they are not exposed to very often (we tend not to give our little people hammers and nails to play with 🙂 )

The kids loved it.

The Preps made a door hanger and the Year 1’s made a T-Light holder (I forgot to take photo’s at the end – sorry!).
