The Cultural Unit

12 Aug

For the first four weeks of term we have been learning about the Aboriginal Culture.  We have made rainsticks, woven artworks, read many Dreamtime Stories and learnt some songs.

Last week we wrapped up our Cultural Unit with an excursion to our local Cobb and Co Museum.

It was a fantastic excursion – so well run and organised.

The students worked their way through a series of activities that included:

  1. Dreamtime Stories and clay sculpture making
  2. artefact study and learning a traditional game.
  3. Fire Making/Attempting (no one was actually successful)
  4. Learning a dance and listening to a didgeridoo player
  5. Outdoor games – spear throwing (with tennis balls) and boomerang throwing
  6. Aboriginal Art – Hand painting and Class MuralIMG_5051

The hardest part was walking up the hill home!

Oh and before we left we quickly visited a special exhibit that the museum had on local sportspeople as a Dad of one of the students in my class was in the display. You can imagine how exciting that was!

Languages and Cultures Festival

11 Aug

This week on my afternoon walk I noticed this sign advertising the Languages and Cultures Festival in Queens Park on Sunday.

After some convincing I managed to talk my husband into walking down to the park to take a look with me (I had to promise him lunch!

The festival was busy and buzzing with people who were wearing their traditional dress.

For lunch we stopped at the Hungarian Langos stall.

We then checked out the Health Expo tent, Information and Multi-faith tent and the Activities and Languages tent and watched a few dance displays.

My husband was hungry again so he went back to the food stalls to buy himself a Gourmet Sausage.

By then we were done so we headed home.

We could of stayed longer but it was so so hot and my lovely fair skin had definitely seen enough sun for the day.

This is the 8th year the festival has been held in Toowoomba and it was really worth going to.  We weren’t overly adventurous with our food choices, I think next year we will need to be braver and try something really different!

Trees Be Gone!

5 Jul

This week we got two large and messy gum trees chopped down.

These trees were located very close to our house (and power lines) and were causing us constant problems (like a branch falling down and denting my car!).

These trees were very tall!  It took 4 men, four hours to cut the two trees down and mulch them all up.

(How crazy is the man in the picture!)

I am looking forward to the weekend when I will no longer need to sweep up the leaves and sticks from our deck, side path, tank stand and gutters! (well this weekend we have to clean out the gutters, but hopefully now these trees are gone they won’t fill up as quickly!)  I do feel a little sorry for the possums that will no longer be able to run across our roof every night.

Thank you PJ Tree Services (from Toowoomba) for clearing away our trees.

Now that these two trees are out of the way we can order our new water tank (my husband wouldn’t let me order one until the trees were cut down).

Enjoy what’s left of the QLD school holidays.

Today I am linking up with FLOG YOUR BLOG FRIDAY

Dinner and a Movie

15 May

On the weekend my husband and I did the classic dinner and a movie date.

I picked the restaurant and he picked the movie.

We ended up with a bit of a mix.

For dinner we went to the Sushi Train.  It was the first time we had been there and we loved it! It is definitely a place we will go back to.

As for the movie – we went to see Ironman 3.

The movie was pretty good – it may have been better if I had actually seen Ironman 1 and 2 (although according to my husband I had).

I am linking up with My Little Drummer Boys and Twinkle in the Eye for Wordless Wednesday.
